چکیده

Hematology is one of the best population health indicators, and quickest way to gain insight into some hematological parameters blood film evaluation. Sometimes, due inability store blood, unavailability instruments during field work, or insufficient amount for complete analysis, evaluation could be only method obtaining information about changes. The brown bears (Ursus arctos) often endangered, protected as an important integral species terrestrial communities. Since any baseline data free-living endangered are particularly important, aim this study was test possibility using evaluation, source data, assessment animal’s and, consequently, status. Blood films seventeen from eastern Turkey were evaluated assess morphology erythrocytes leukocytes, estimate total leukocyte count, determine differential look presence cell inclusions hemoparasites. Rouleaux formations present in twelve animals, poikilocytosis four, while parasitic nematodes, microfilariae, found nine out bears. results confirmed that alone use assessing status, but more accurate need analyzed. New findings study, such rouleaux microfilaria Turkey, have opened door further investigation field.

Capture, Anesthesia, and Disturbance of Free-Ranging Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) during Hibernation

We conducted thirteen immobilizations of previously collared hibernating two- to four-year-old brown bears (Ursus arctos) weighing 21-66 kg in central Sweden in winter 2010 and 2011 for comparative physiology research. Here we report, for the first time, an effective protocol for the capture and anesthesia of free-ranging brown bears during hibernation and an assessment of the disturbance the c...

Metabolic Changes in Summer Active and Anuric Hibernating Free-Ranging Brown Bears (Ursus arctos)

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) hibernates for 5 to 6 months each winter and during this time ingests no food or water and remains anuric and inactive. Despite these extreme conditions, bears do not develop azotemia and preserve their muscle and bone strength. To date most renal studies have been limited to small numbers of bears, often in captive environments. Sixteen free-ranging bears were dar...

Dental and periodontal health in free-ranging Swedish brown bears (Ursus arctos).

Dental data from 22 Swedish brown bears (Ursus arctos) were collected during April and May 2008, during the annual capture of free-ranging brown bears in Dalarna County, Sweden by the Scandinavian Brown Bear Research Project. The bears were of different genders and ages. All animals were weighed and subjected to physical examination and all were found to be in good condition. The oral cavity wa...

Haematological and biochemical reference intervals for free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Sweden

BACKGROUND Establishment of haematological and biochemical reference intervals is important to assess health of animals on individual and population level. Reference intervals for 13 haematological and 34 biochemical variables were established based on 88 apparently healthy free-ranging brown bears (39 males and 49 females) in Sweden. The animals were chemically immobilised by darting from a he...

Genetic relationships of extant brown bears (Ursus arctos) and polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and brown bears (Ursus arctos) are closely related species for which extensive mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenetic comparisons have been made. We used previously published genotype data for 8 microsatellite DNA loci from 930 brown bears in 19 populations and 473 polar bears in 16 populations to compare the population genetic relationships of extant populations o...
